Media Alert: Save the Children
Calgary, November 15, 2001
MEDIA ALERT:
Their personal stories are extraordinary.
Their work on behalf of children in some of the world’s most troubled
regions is remarkable.
On Friday November 16th the Calgary media will
be offered the rare opportunity to interview Save the Children’s
Program and Country Directors from Canada and around the world.
Nadine Grant is Director of Programs for Save the Children
Canada. From Afghanistan to East Timor, and from Sri Lanka
to across Canada, Nadine’s professional experience has equipped
her with solid skills to advocate not only on behalf of children, but
with children.
At 19 years of age Patricia Erb Delfin was one of the “disappeared”
in South America where she endured three months of horrific
torture. Patricia has brought meaning to her life by committing herself
to working on behalf of others. She is the Country Director for Save
the Children’s programs in Bolivia and Peru.
Cherry Kingsley is a former IV drug user and child sex trade
worker. Having successfully exited the sex trade Ms. Kingsley
works with Save the Children Canada to help other sexually exploited
young people exit the trade.
Mathenge Munene is Save the Children Canada’s Country
Director for Kenya based in Nairobi. As a child rights advocate,
Mathenge has lobbied the Kenyan government extensively and successfully;
which has resulted in child rights legislation that will be implemented
by the Kenyan parliament.
Special Building Better Tomorrows guest speaker is Margot Franssen,
President, The Body Shop Canada. Franssen has gained wide respect
in the corporate community for her powerful message on corporate philanthropy
and is a world leader in bringing positive change to communities around
the globe. She is also known for her forthright views on issues that
affect children, women and the environment.
This year marks the 11th anniversary of the signing of the UN Convention
on the Rights of the Child, which guaranteed protection and the right
to a secure childhood for all children. Save the Children believes that
children must be recognized for what they are: equal citizens with inherent
rights and vital social economic and cultural roles.
