1. Key messages

I know what key messages are. My company has developed a full set of them. We review them regularly and we use them consistently in all of our communications initiatives.

I know what key messages are. I know we should have them available at all times and that we should use them consistently. In reality we develop and use them only when we need to.

I really don’t see why we need key messages.

2. Communication skills.

I have well honed communications skills. I’m at ease, confident and quite sure that I communicate with authority and conviction in every situation.

I impart ideas clearly; my pacing and diction are excellent but I can feel somewhat nervous. I can loose my concentration even though I may be reading from a script or from speaking notes. I often think that when I’m finished speaking while I’ve said all the right words, I really haven’t communicated what I wanted to.

I’ m really quite nervous and I tend to loose my train of thought often particularly with the media, with large audiences or when it’s really important that I communicate effectively.

3. Media relations training

I know exactly what my relationship with the media is. I’m always well prepared for media interviews. I know my key messages and I know how to deliver them with authority and conviction. I know how to use a bridging statement. I am always honest with the media but at the same time I know how to manage the interview. I am skilled at crisis management.

I’ve had experience dealing with the media. Sometimes although I’ve prepared for an interview the questioning follows quite a different tract than I had anticipated it to. When that happens, I can find it difficult to bring the interview back to the points I wanted to make. I sometimes have the feeling that while I answered the questions as honestly and completely as I could, that the interview didn’t go quite as well as I had wanted it to.

I want to represent my company as well as I possibly can but I feel quite uncomfortable speaking to the media.
